School of Juris Master Holds the Student Forum on Legal Clinic and Core Legal Practice Skills Cultivation of the International Forum on Clinical Legal Education

On December 14, 2020, the Student Forum onLegal Clinic and Core Legal Practice Skills Cultivationof the International Forum on Clinical Legal EducationconcludedatCUPL’sXueyuanRoadCampus.Asa sub-forum ofthe 20th Anniversary Celebration of Chinese ClinicalLegal Education&International Forum on Education, Service and Rule of Law, this student forumaimedto showcase the achievements of clinicallegal education in talent cultivation from the perspective of students, and discussthe opportunities and challengesofclinicallegal education.Thissub-forum,hosted by the ClinicalLegal Education Professional Committee of the China Association for Legal Education of China Law Society and organized by the School ofJuris Master in CUPL,is also one of the series of events celebrating the 15th anniversary of theSchool of Juris Master in CUPL. Thisforumwas held bothonline and offline.

Prof.Xu Shenjian, Dean of theSchool of JurisMaster,first gavean openingaddress. He believedthatinvolving law students in a professional environmentwas the best way to cultivatetheircore legal skills, thatclinical legal educationwas an effective wayin this regard, and thateducation at law schooland vocationaleducation after graduationshould bea continuous process. The theoretical coursesof law school cultivate students' legal thinking,whileclinical education allows students to apply legal theoriesand improve theirpractical skills.

Participating students made speeches on the theme of Legal Clinic and Core Legal Practice Skills Cultivation.

Liu Wenhao shared hisgains inthe legal cliniccoursefrom three aspectsin his speech titledLegal Clinic Education:Combination of Theory and Practice.

Ouyang Chuxin gave a speech titledPractical Expression of Legal Clinic Course,sharingher gains andthe issuesshefound in the legal clinic from three aspects.

Ran Yinghangdelivereda keynote speech titledImprovingLegalProfessionalSkillsby Taking Advantagesof ClinicCourses. She believedthattheclinicallegaleducation modeland juris master education naturallyhaveone thing in common:pursuing practicalness.

Wei Yuqian shared herviewson legal clinic coursesin her speech titledCultivating Legal Thinking in Clinic Practice. She believedthat the clinic shortensthe distance between legal theory and practice, andthatstudents can at least improve their legal thinking in three aspects: extracting key facts of the case, taking evidence as the basis and law as the criterion.

YuJinmo shared his feelings in theclinicalcourse of administrative lawin her speech titledOntheRole ofClinical LegalCourses inImprovingPersonalSkills.According to her, the cliniccoursefullyintegrates theory and practice,and helpsimprovestudents’ability in practice and solve problems in discussion.

In herspeechtitledCalmness andEnthusiasminLegal Clinics,Zhang Xiaoqinexpressed her viewsthat the legal clinic means both calmness and enthusiasm, whichis not only reflected in purefeeling, but also integrated into every part of the learning of core legal skills.Enthusiasm is born in human nature, whilecalmnessas a habit needs to be learned and trained.

Zhao Yanfeng sharedhis views onlegal practice skills trainingin his speech titledClinicalLegalEducation:Learning in Practice.In his opinion,the legal clinichas been shouldering two missions from the very beginning:providing legal services to disadvantaged groups and providing practical skills training for lawschoolstudents.

Dr. Li Xiao commented on the speeches ofthe above-mentionedseven studentsandshared hisviews on clinicallegal education.
